The Dimension sst 768 is a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D prototyping printer which uses ABS plastic to build parts and assemblies. Completed models accurately represent the original design and are very useful for Proof of Concept, Functional Testing, and Product Mockup. The printer can also build models of objects derived from DICOM source such as edited 3D scans and converted images from x-ray, CT, MRI; users must convert original DCM files to STL format prior to submission. Depending on design and application, the sst-768 can build functional parts with a reasonable range of usability, especially if the part is fixed or stationary such a bracket or support.

The build envelop of the dimension sst 768 is 8 x 8 x 12 inches (203 x 203 x 305 mm) and the plastic filament is available in several different colors. Parts are typically built in a single color since the operator must change the filament cartridge to change build color. We can print different parts of the same assemble in different colors if the STL files are provided for each individual parts and the assembly is design to allow interconnecting of parts; note this process may increase cost and total time of build.
The Dimension’s primary advantage is its ABS plastic model material; the fused plastic is both strong and durable. It can take a lot of handling and most features not shear under moderate pressure.
TheDimension sst 768’s limitations are its inability to reproduce very small curves and the long length of time which is required for each build. Although the stated minimum solid feature in 0.040″ (1.016mm), wall this thin tend to crack from shrinkage while cooling after removing from the machine. Other features built at 0.040″ tend to break during model post-processing and support material removal.
During compiling, the CatalystEx 4.x software will detect non-conformities in the model and remove points and very small features; an STL file analysis provides a list of such actions for user review.
